Satellite IP Network Extension

CASE STUDY
SPORTS: Columbia bike race – Communication and GPS position monitoring
Problem: How to direct coverage from a small aircraft and from camera-mounted motorcycles to enable coverage of the best racing action in road cycle racing.
Solution: IP Mesh nodes were placed on three motorcycles. Because these nodes can be quite a distance apart depending on how split up the riders are, they were also placed on a plane and OB truck. The OB truck was then linked to the master control room at the studio via a low earth orbit IP network.
This network enabled communications from the MCR and on to the OB truck, pilot, and the motorcycle riders. In addition, GPS positions from all IP Mesh nodes were given and overlayed onto a moving map, allowing the program director to manage the location of the bikes with cameras. The pilot can also see from the map the best position for the plane in order to relay the pictures from the bikes to the OB truck.
CASE STUDY
FARMING: Crop yield monitoring
Problem: To help farm owners forecast the yields of valuable crops, workers photographed sample regions within the cultivation area. However, there was the concern that expected yields were being under reported, with the difference sold on the black market. The crops are in highly remote locations, where there is little to no mobile phone coverage.
Solution: Low earth orbit satellite terminals were installed and combined with Domo’s IP Mesh units. With this combination, photographs taken are uploaded automatically with GPS location and time data, combatting fraudulent yield reporting.
